The Art of the Nudge: Standing Out with a Personal Touch
Share
Why It Works
- Emotional Resonance: Handwritten notes carry a sense of warmth and sincerity that digital messages often lack. They show that you’ve invested time and effort, which can make the recipient feel appreciated and valued.
- Memorability: In an age where most communication is digital, receiving a physical card stands out. It’s a tangible reminder of the interaction and can leave a lasting impression.
- Personal Connection: A personal note can convey empathy, understanding, and genuine interest. It can bridge the gap between a professional relationship and a personal one, fostering trust and loyalty.
Practical Applications
In Business - Case study with Tom Toumazis MBE
In the professional world, where relationships are key, the personal touch can be a game-changer. Whether you're thanking a client for their business, acknowledging a colleague’s hard work, or reaching out to a potential partner, a handwritten note can set you apart. Not only can this build client retention and enhance customer loyalty, but you'll stand out and connect at a more personal level when networking.
I would like to introduce you to one of our loyal customers and fellow stationery lover; Tom Toumazis. Through various conversations over the years we've got to know what Tom does, and learnt that he practices what we preach everyday. Tom has spent a career in media and entertainment working for some of the largest media companies in the world. He is also one of the leading speakers at Speakers for Schools and has given two TEDx talks including The Art of the Nudge. It celebrates all that I believe in and showcases how he uses our cards in his business to enhance customer relationships and gives personal accounts that really resonated with me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. We caught up with Tom and asked him a few questions about where his love of letters came from....In today's fast-paced, digital world, making a lasting impression can be challenging. The barrage of emails, messages, and notifications means that it's easy to get lost in the noise. However, there's a simple yet powerful tool that can help you stand out: the personal touch. Something as small as a thank you card or a personal notecard can serve as that little nudge that ensures you're remembered long after the interaction has ended.
The Power of Personalisation
At its core, personalisation is about making someone feel special and valued. It's about recognizing the individual in a sea of masses. When you take the time to send a handwritten note, you’re doing more than just communicating; you’re building a connection.
The only birthday card I got through the post as a child was from my Aunt. It made me feel special and that idea of standing out, being made to feel special with something as simple as letter writing captured me. But I only got back into it 20 or so years ago, swiftly followed by followed by thank you cards and of course holiday postcards! They’re lots of fun. Today I must send over 250 cards a year.Have you always written letters? If not, then when did it become 'your thing' and why?
What 3 words would you use to describe the satisfaction associated with letter writing?Personal, Physical, Private.
Who would you most like to receive a letter from?My grandson, he’s only 11 months old but, one day, I will be over the moon if I get one from him!
In Personal Life
As you can see from Tom's talk, the world of personal and business overlap. The art of the nudge isn’t limited to the business world. In our personal lives, small gestures like a hand written card can have a significant impact on our relationships, can strengthen friendships, celebrate milestones, offer comfort at challenging times.
How to Craft the Perfect Note
- Be Genuine: Authenticity is key. Write from the heart and let your true feelings and personality shine through.
- Be Specific: Mention specific details about the interaction or relationship. It shows that you’re attentive and truly engaged.
- Keep It Simple: A personal note doesn’t have to be long. Even a few thoughtful sentences can make a significant impact.
- Presentation Matters: Invest in quality stationery. The look and feel of the card can enhance the overall experience.
The Ripple Effect
The impact of a personal note extends beyond the initial recipient. It can create a ripple effect, influencing how they interact with others and how they perceive your relationship. In business, this can lead to referrals, repeat business, and a strong reputation. In personal relationships, it can foster deeper connections and lasting bonds. In a world where digital communication dominates, the art of the nudge — through handwritten notes and personal touches — can set you apart.
It's a small gesture with a big impact, one that can make you memorable and help build meaningful, lasting connections. So, the next time you want to show appreciation, make a connection, or simply stand out, consider picking up a pen and writing a note. It’s a simple act that can make all the difference.
