Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

In my former career, I was Head of Design and Technology at a grammar school - but I decided that it was time for a change. Having studied design and toys before teaching, I came full circle and decided that it would be great to try and source beautifully designed products and toys and curate a children's store that really considered all aspects of design - sustainability, design for the future and the importance of play.

Q. Tell us a bit about your store and why you opened it?

Our boutique, was already called Buttercup when we took over the store. It had been Buttercup for 12 years, so we assumed (wrongly - as it turned out) that the name was established and that customers would know the boutique by its name. In actual fact most of the customers knew the store as 'Felicity Wishes' - a children's character, from a set of books back in the 1990's, as the shop originally had a painting of 'Felicity' on the door.

We naturally removed the painting, but kept the name, as we love it and it made us think of one of those magical moments when you are small and someone holds a buttercup under your chin to see if the golden glow of the petals shows on your skin, apparently indicates if you like butter or not, Because you are small it all seems so real!

We have changed the store and made it our own, but still love the name Buttercup and everyone knows us as such.

Q. What is one item you can’t live without?

One item I can't live without at work isn't really an item - it's my brilliant, wonderful and very creative assistant - Oy Wah! She is totally fabulous and apart from being a hugely creative and talented designer and maker in her own right, she is the best team mate I could wish for!

Away from work I really can't live without the camera on my mobile phone. I love to walk to the beach at Whitstable summer and winter as the sun sets and take photographs of the amazing sunsets that we get here. Some of which make it to the Buttercup Instagram!

Q. Where did you first hear about Katie Leamon?

We first came across Katie Leamon at our first trade fair in January 2012 - Top Drawer. We had't even opened Buttercup yet but were out sourcing some lovely brands for the store. Katie had just started up too I think the previous year, we loved her cards immediately and have been stocking them ever since. Back then Katie would customise the cards for us, so we had some very special New Bambino ones that were unique to Buttercup .

Q. What is your favourite Katie Leamon Product?

It has to be the New Bambino cards for us, they have continued to be best sellers for the last 6 and 1/2 years and we get so many of our customers visiting just to pick one of them up when there has been a new arrival.

We also secretly covet Katie's amazingly beautiful Christmas crackers and every year we just long to have a set on our own Christmas table but get so caught up with the busiest time of the year at Buttercup, that we always forget to buy them in time!

What has been the best moment in your stores life so far?

We are an independent children's boutique, stocking beautifully designed wooden toys and clothing made from natural materials . We work hard to source quality products and have won prizes for window displays, awards from the 'Let Toys be Toys for Girls and Boys' campaign for 5 successive years, all of which we are proud off but probably one of the best moments was when Daniel Postgate - son of Oliver Postgate, who wrote the Clangers and Bagpuss was in the store reading some of his stories to the children.

He told me that he had a meeting to go to afterwards, with Peter Firmin - co-creator of The Clangers and Bagpuss, so when Peter arrived he would have to go. Peter duly arrived (carrying a very old Tesco carrier bag) and waited until Daniel had finished reading, then as he was introduced to the children and their parents - he asked if any of them knew Bagpuss.

He then asked if they would like one more story and proceeded to sit down and read the wonderful Bagpuss story, just as it was on TV back in the 1970s.

He then pulled the original Bagpuss out of the carrier bag and passed him around the children and their very delighted parents! Most of the parents had grown up with Bagpuss in their childhood - so they couldn't believe their eyes!

It was a really special unplanned moment, one that delighted everyone and will be a really special memory to treasure at Buttercup.
