Everybody loves getting flowers. Whether you’re sending them to your bestie, loved ones (or even to yourself), there are few better ways to brighten someone’s (or your) day than with a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers delivered to their door. And whatever the reason for being sent, flowers are always appreciated by the receiver.

While letterbox flowers is the latest trend in flower delivery, the act of sending flowers dates back to the prehistoric period; arrangements of fossilised flowers have been found within multiple cave dwellings. Interestingly, within these caves archeologists may have found the first evidence of flowers being sent to a sick person. It is believed that in prehistoric times flowers were sent as a get-well gift due to their medicinal properties, while today, we send flowers to primarily to cheer someone up by the way they look.

The language of flowers

In the Victorian-era flowers were used to express emotions and send symbolic messages, partly due to the restrictive nature of Victorian society. Flowers had been used in other eras, such as the Egyptian times to send messages but it was in the Victorian times when meanings started to be assigned to flowers, that the Language of Flowers was developed. Want to send flowers to your best friend? Send yellow roses, symbolising friendship for an added subliminal touch.

Saying thank you

Flowers have been used as a way to communicate emotions for millennia, but one of the most popular forms of flower gifting is as a way to express gratitude and say thank you. This is a tradition that’s evolved over time as flowers have moved away from a purely medicinal purpose to a way of expressing emotions.
