What to Write in a Baby's First Christmas Card
Share

A baby's first Christmas only happens once, and the card that marks it often ends up somewhere it'll be kept - tucked into a baby book, a memory box, or the back of a photo album. The baby won't read it this year, but one day they might. That makes it one of the nicest cards to write, and one of the easiest to overthink.
Here are baby's first Christmas card messages for every kind of relationship.
Short and Sweet
Sometimes a single line is all a small card needs.
- "Happy first Christmas, little one."
- "Wishing you the merriest first Christmas."
- "Here's to the first of many magical Christmases."
- "Your very first Christmas - and the world is so glad you're here for it."
For a Grandson or Granddaughter
- "To our wonderful grandson on his first Christmas - you've made this the best one yet."
- "Happy first Christmas, darling girl. Grandma and Grandad love you more than all the presents under the tree."
- "Of all the gifts this year, you are the one we're most grateful for. Happy first Christmas."
For a Son or Daughter
A card from parents to their baby is really a letter to the future - written now, read years from now.
- "Our first Christmas as a family of three. You've made everything brighter. All our love, Mummy and Daddy."
- "You won't remember this Christmas, but we will never forget it. Happy first Christmas, sweetheart."
- "This year we got the best present we could ever have asked for - you."
For a Niece or Nephew
- "Happy first Christmas from your favourite auntie. I can't wait to spoil you for many more."
- "Welcome to Christmas, little one - it's very loud and full of chocolate, and you're going to love it."
For a Friend's Baby
- "Wishing your little one the happiest first Christmas, and wishing you all a wonderful first Christmas together."
- "Sending so much love to the three of you this Christmas - what a year it's been."
Don't Forget the New Parents
A baby's first Christmas is also the parents' first Christmas with a baby - usually tired, often overwhelmed, and very much in need of a kind word. A line just for them goes a long way.
- "And to the new parents - you're doing brilliantly. Have the most wonderful first Christmas together."
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Write something they can read later. A line about what the baby is like right now - their first laugh, how small they are, who they look like - becomes a lovely detail years down the line.
Date it. Add the year inside the card. It sounds obvious, but it's the detail most people wish they'd included when they find the card again.
Keep it small and keep it safe. A little card is easy to slip into a baby book or memory box, which is exactly where the best ones end up.
Our Baby's 1st Christmas card is a delicate hand printed mini card with a scalloped edge - small enough to tuck into a gift or a stocking, and just the right size to keep. It's also available as a pack of six for new parents sending first-Christmas notes to family.
The Most Important Thing
A baby's first Christmas card doesn't need to be clever. It needs to capture a little of this particular moment - who this baby is, and how glad everyone is that they're here. Write it for the person they'll grow up to be, and it will be worth keeping.
