What to Write in a New Baby Card: Messages for Every Relationship
A new baby is one of the occasions that most deserves a proper card - and one of the ones that most often produces a blank. Not because there's nothing to say, but because there's too much, and the space inside a card feels small against it.
This guide is for that moment. Messages for parents, grandparents, friends, colleagues and everyone in between - with enough variety that you'll find something that sounds like you.
Before You Write
Two things that make any new baby message better:
Name the baby if you know it. "Welcome to the world, [name]" lands completely differently to a generic congratulations. It shows you know, and that you thought about it.
Write to the parents, not just about the baby. The baby won't read the card for years. The parents will read it in the first exhausted, emotional days of a new person's life. A message that acknowledges them - what they're feeling, what this moment means - is the one they'll remember.
For Close Friends
Warm and personal: "I can't quite believe you're someone's mum now - except that I can, completely, because you're going to be extraordinary at it. Welcome to the world, [name]. You've got the best one."
Emotional and honest: "I've been trying to write this for ten minutes because none of it quite covers it. A new person. Your person. I'm so happy for you both."
Light and loving: "You did it. You made a whole human. Sleep when you can, accept all the help, and know that we're here for absolutely everything. Welcome, [name]."
For a single parent: "You're doing something extraordinary - and you're doing it brilliantly. Welcome to the world, [name]. You couldn't have a better person in your corner."
For Family Members
From grandparents: "A grandchild. We've been waiting for you and we didn't even know it. Welcome to the family, [name] - you are already so loved."
From siblings: "Being your aunt/uncle is going to be the best thing. Welcome to the world, little one - I've already got plans for us."
From extended family: "A new arrival in the family is always something to celebrate properly. Welcome, [name] - so glad you're here. Congratulations to you both."
Warm and simple: "The family just got better. Congratulations to you all - and welcome, [name]."
For Colleagues
Professional but warm: "Wonderful news - congratulations to you both. Wishing you all the joy and rest you can find in these first weeks. Looking forward to hearing all about [name/him/her] when you're ready."
Light and genuine: "Such lovely news. Congratulations on [name] - enjoy every moment of this, and don't worry about anything else for now."
From a team: "We're all absolutely delighted for you. Welcome to the world, [name] - and congratulations to the whole family. We'll hold things together here - just focus on the important stuff."
For Twins or Multiples
Warm and celebratory: "Two. You did two. Welcome to the world, both of you - and congratulations to the parents who are already the most impressive people we know."
Simple and joyful: "Double the arrivals, double the love, double the congratulations. Welcome, [names/both of you]."
For a Second or Third Baby
Acknowledging the older sibling(s): "A new baby and a big brother/sister in one house - lucky, lucky [name]. Congratulations to the whole family on your newest member."
Warm and simple: "Another one. Congratulations - you clearly know what you're doing. Welcome to the world, [name]."
When You Don't Know the Baby's Name
Simple and genuine: "Welcome to the world, little one. We can't wait to meet you - and in the meantime, we're sending all our love to the whole family."
Warm and open: "A new arrival. Congratulations to you both - and welcome to the newest member of the family, whoever you turn out to be."
If You're Not Sure What to Say
Sometimes the occasion is big enough that the right words feel impossible. In those cases, keep it simple and honest:
"I don't quite have the words for this. Welcome. We love you already."
Or simply: "A new person in the world. What a thing. Congratulations."
A card that says exactly what you mean - even briefly - is always better than one that borrows someone else's words.
