What to Write in a Teacher's Christmas Card

A teacher's Christmas card often gets kept longer than the gift beside it - tucked into a drawer, pinned to a board, reread on a quiet day. It doesn't need to be long. It needs to sound like it was actually written for this teacher, not copied from a card the whole class signed without much thought.

Here's how to find the right words.

From a Parent

  • "Wishing you a very happy Christmas, and thank you for everything you've done for [child's name] this year."
  • "Merry Christmas! [Child's name] has loved being in your class this year - thank you for all your care and patience."
  • "Sending warm Christmas wishes and such a genuine thank you for the year you've given [child's name]."

From a Student

  • "Merry Christmas! Thank you for being the best teacher this year."
  • "Happy Christmas! I've loved being in your class."
  • "Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a lovely holiday!"

For the Whole Class Card

  • "Merry Christmas from all of us! Thank you for such a brilliant term."
  • "Wishing you a wonderful Christmas - from your whole class, with thanks."
  • "Happy Christmas! We've loved learning with you this year."

For a Teaching Assistant or Support Staff

Teaching assistants and support staff are easy to overlook at Christmas, despite often knowing a child just as well as the class teacher.

  • "Merry Christmas, and thank you for all the ways you've supported [child's name] this year - it hasn't gone unnoticed."
  • "Wishing you a very happy Christmas. Thank you for everything you do."

From One Colleague to Another

  • "Merry Christmas! Thank you for making the staff room a good place to be this term."
  • "Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a proper rest over the holidays - you've earned it."

The Most Important Thing

A single specific line - what the teacher actually did, how a child changed or grew this term - will always be remembered longer than a generic "thank you for everything." Keep it short, keep it sincere, and it'll mean more than the gift sitting next to it.
