What to Write in a Valentine's Card
Share
Valentine's cards carry a particular kind of pressure - there's an expectation of romance, but too much can feel forced, and too little can feel like you didn't try. The best messages sound like you, specific to the relationship you actually have, rather than borrowed from a greetings aisle.
Here's how to find the right words, whatever stage you're at - with messages for partners, husbands, wives, new relationships, friends and family, and a few ideas for how to sign off.
The Simple Formula
If you only remember one thing, make it this. A good Valentine's message usually does three small things:
Say something specific. One detail only the two of you would recognise - a place, a habit, a joke, a moment from this year.
Say how you feel. Plainly. "I love you" has lasted this long for a reason.
Look forward. A line about the year ahead, the next trip, or simply "here's to many more."
Two or three sentences is plenty. Written by hand, in your own words, it will mean more than anything you could copy out.
For a Long-Term Partner
- "Still my favourite person, all these years later. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "I fall for you a little more every year. Happy Valentine's."
- "You're still the best decision I ever made. I love you."
- "Of all the ordinary days we've had together, I wouldn't swap a single one. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Home is wherever you are. Thank you for another year of it."
- "You still make me laugh more than anyone. That's the whole secret, I think."
For Your Husband
- "Married and still my Valentine every year. I love you."
- "To my husband, my best friend and my favourite person to do absolutely nothing with. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Thank you for all the small things you do that you think I don't notice. I notice. I love you."
- "Every year I think I couldn't love you more, and every year I'm wrong."
- "Still the one I want to tell everything to first. Happy Valentine's, husband."
For Your Wife
- "After all this time, you're still it for me. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "To my wife - thank you for making our life together feel like the best adventure. I love you."
- "You make every room better just by walking into it. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Lucky doesn't quite cover it. Happy Valentine's to my wonderful wife."
- "I'd choose you again tomorrow, and every day after that."
Valentine's cards for your partner
For Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend
- "You're my favourite notification, my favourite plan and my favourite person. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Being with you is the easiest thing I've ever done."
- "I like you more than I've told you. This seemed like the right card to say it in."
- "Here's to more late dinners, long walks and terrible films. Happy Valentine's."
- "You've made this year so much better just by being in it."
For a New Relationship
- "So glad this is our first Valentine's together - here's to many more."
- "Didn't expect to feel this happy this early. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Getting to know you has been the best part of this year."
- "No pressure, just a card to say I'm really glad I met you."
- "I'm not sure what you've done, but I can't stop smiling. Happy Valentine's."
Funny and Playful
- "Happy Valentine's Day to the only person I'll actually share my snacks with."
- "You're stuck with me. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Wishing you a Valentine's Day almost as good as you deserve. Almost."
- "Thank you for putting up with me. I know it's a full-time job."
- "I love you even when you steal the duvet. Mostly."
- "You're the reason I check my phone and smile like an idiot."
Short Valentine's Messages
For when the card says it already, or you'd rather keep it simple:
- "Always you."
- "Be mine?"
- "I adore you."
- "Forever yours."
- "You and me."
- "Love you more."
- "Still crazy about you."
- "My favourite person, always."
Bold and playful Valentine's cards
For Someone Far Away
- "Distance doesn't change how I feel. Happy Valentine's Day, from wherever I am to wherever you are."
- "Counting down until I see you again. Happy Valentine's."
- "Missing you more than this card can hold. Not long now."
- "Different time zones, same heart. Happy Valentine's Day."
For a Friend (or Galentine's Day)
Valentine's isn't only for couples. A card for a friend - on the 14th or on Galentine's Day the day before - is often the one that's kept longest.
- "Happy Galentine's Day to the friend who knows everything and loves me anyway."
- "You're the best thing I didn't have to fall in love with. Happy Valentine's, friend."
- "Thank you for every voice note, every late-night chat and every 'I'm on my way.'"
- "Who needs a Valentine when I have you? Happy Galentine's."
- "Here's to the friendship that outlasts all the rest."
Cards for friends and Galentine's
For Family and Children
- "To my favourite little Valentine - I love you to the moon and back."
- "Happy Valentine's Day, Mum. You were my first Valentine and you're still one of the best."
- "Happy Valentine's to my wonderful dad - thank you for always being there."
- "Sending you all my love today and every day."
How to Sign a Valentine's Card
The sign-off is the last thing they read, so it's worth a moment's thought:
- Classic: "All my love," "Love always," "Forever yours," "Yours, always."
- Warm and simple: "Love you lots," "With love," "Lots of love."
- Playful: "Your Valentine (obviously)," "Your favourite," "Guess who?"
- The traditional mystery: Unsigned, or just a question mark. It still works - as long as they have a fair chance of guessing.
Adding a kiss or two is entirely acceptable on Valentine's Day.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Specific beats grand. A line that references something only the two of you would understand will always land better than a sweeping declaration that could apply to anyone.
Humour works if it's genuinely you. If your relationship runs on jokes, lean into that rather than forcing sincerity that doesn't sound like either of you.
It doesn't have to be romantic love. Valentine's cards for friends, family, or anyone you appreciate are increasingly common - the same principle applies: specific and sincere beats generic every time.
Let the card do some of the work. A card that already says "I Adore You" or "Grow Old With Me" on the front only needs a line or two inside. A more understated design leaves room for more of your own words.

Choosing the Card
Our Valentine's cards are designed to give your message a beautiful home - from the bold Be Mine? Heart and Eye Heart You to the quietly romantic I Adore You, Grow Old With Me and Together Forever. For a friend, You're My Favourite Human or Hug In A Card say it without any romance required.
The Most Important Thing
A Valentine's card doesn't need to be poetic to mean something. It needs to sound like it was actually written by you, for this person, this year - which is exactly the kind of thing a borrowed line never quite manages.
