What to Write in an Anniversary Card

Anniversary Mignon Card – anniversary card – Katie Leamon

Anniversary cards fall into two quite different categories: the one you write for your own partner, and the one you write for someone else's relationship - a couple you know, married friends, parents celebrating a milestone year. Each calls for a different kind of message, and it's worth knowing which one you're writing before you pick up the pen.

This guide covers both.

For Your Own Partner

The best anniversary messages tend to be specific rather than grand. A line about something only the two of you would understand usually lands better than a sweeping declaration.

  • "Another year of us, and I'd choose every single one of them again."
  • "Still my favourite person to come home to. Happy anniversary."
  • "Here's to [number] years and all the ones still ahead. I love you."
  • "Can't believe it's been [number] years. Feels like both no time at all and forever."

If you want to reference something specific - an in-joke, a shared memory, a running argument about something trivial - that's almost always more meaningful than a generic line, however well-written.

For a Couple You Know Well

For close friends or family celebrating an anniversary, warmth and a touch of admiration for their relationship usually strikes the right note.

  • "Watching you two together over the years has been one of the best things. Happy anniversary to you both."
  • "So much love to you both as you celebrate another year together. Here's to many more."
  • "You two make it look easy, even though I know it isn't always. Happy anniversary."

For a Milestone Anniversary

Significant anniversaries - tenth, twenty-fifth, fiftieth - often call for something a little more considered, acknowledging the scale of what's being celebrated.

  • "25 years is no small thing. Wishing you both a wonderful day celebrating everything you've built together."
  • "Half a century together. What an extraordinary thing to celebrate. All our love."
  • "Here's to [number] years of the kind of partnership most people only hope for."

For Parents or Family

Anniversary cards for parents or older relatives often benefit from a note of genuine admiration alongside the warmth.

  • "Growing up watching you two has taught me so much about what love actually looks like. Happy anniversary."
  • "Wishing you both a wonderful anniversary. So grateful for the example you've set."

A Note on Humour

If the couple has a sense of humour about long-term relationships, a lighter message can work well - just save it for people who'll genuinely appreciate it rather than the whole card list.

  • "Still putting up with each other after all these years. Impressive. Happy anniversary."
  • "Wishing you another year of arguing about the thermostat and still choosing each other anyway."

The Most Important Thing

An anniversary message doesn't need to sum up an entire relationship in one line. A short, specific, sincere note - even just two sentences - will always mean more than something that reads like it was written for any couple, about any relationship.
