Why do we send cards?

Have you ever thought why we send cards? Is it because it’s polite or because it’s expected, or is it just because it's a tradition that we've grown up with. I think everyone can agree we enjoy receiving them, it feels personal, authentic and real. Receiving a card is not just about reading the message, it’s opening the envelope, holding the card and then displaying it after.

Historical evidence of sending greetings can be found all over the world, it seems it’s human nature to send our thoughts and wishes to others. In ancient China people used to exchange messages over New year and early Egyptians sent each other greetings on Papyrus scrolls. Fast forward to 15th century Europe and paper greetings had began to be given at Valentine’s, the oldest of which is now on show at the British Museum.

In 1840 the postage stamp was introduced in Britain, meaning there was an affordable and accessible way to send your greetings. Handwritten letters were still the main form of correspondence until in 1843, a man named Sir Henry Cole commissioned an Artist to create artwork for a ‘Christmas Card’, the card design went into production and was sold later that year.

In the 1860s companies began to mass produce greetings cards, with the invention of the printing press spurring this on. Advancements in technology continued into the 20th century and turned greeting cards into a global industry.

With the inventions of computers, the internet and more recently smartphones, many predicted the “end of print”. However, In the UK the average person still sends 55 cards per year. So that begs the question, In a world where you can send a message in seconds, why would you bother sending a card? I think that’s the point, the bothering, making the effort to send a card shows someone that you really care.
