The Best Luxury New Baby Cards: A Guide to Choosing the Right One
Share
A new baby is one of the occasions that most rewards a properly chosen card. Parents are overwhelmed, exhausted, and more emotionally open than they'll be at almost any other point in their lives. A beautiful card - chosen thoughtfully, written in a way that feels genuine - is something they'll keep for years. A generic one gets lost in the pile.
This is a guide to luxury new baby cards: what makes one genuinely worth buying, how to choose the right design, and what to write inside.
What Makes a New Baby Card Luxury
Card stock above 300gsm. Weight is the first thing anyone notices about a card, even if they can't say why. A card that feels substantial in the hand - that has presence and solidity - communicates quality before a single word of the design has registered. Thin card feels like an afterthought. Heavyweight card feels like something was put into it.
All our new baby cards are printed on FSC-certified heavyweight card - the same quality used throughout our range, chosen because it's the weight at which a card starts to feel like something worth keeping.
A design that suits the occasion. A luxury new baby card should feel like it was designed for this specific moment - not a generic pattern with "baby" added. The best designs have a considered quality: bold illustration, thoughtful typography, or quiet elegance that feels appropriate to the arrival of a new person in the world. Our new baby range is designed in our North London studio with exactly this in mind.
Blank inside. A card with a pre-printed message has done the work for you in the way that matters least. A blank interior is the space to write something that comes from you - something that names the baby, acknowledges the parents, and says what you actually mean. Every card in our collection is blank inside.
An envelope that matches. The envelope is the first thing the new parents see. A beautiful card in a thin, badly fitting envelope undermines itself before it's been opened. Our new baby cards come with envelopes chosen to complement each design - gold foil, ivory, polka dot - and sized to fit properly.
Plastic-free. We've been plastic-free since 2020. No cellophane sleeves, no plastic wrapping - just card and envelope.
How to Choose the Right Design
New baby cards tend toward the soft and gentle - pale colours, illustrated animals, typographic celebrations. Within that, there's more variety than most people expect, and the right choice depends on a few things:
Who are the parents? A close friend with a distinctive taste deserves a card that reflects it - something bold and illustrated rather than generically sweet. A colleague or acquaintance calls for something beautiful but less personal in its design.
Boy, girl, or unknown? Many of our designs are completely gender-neutral - botanical illustrations, typographic designs, bold colour combinations that work for any baby. If you know, there are designs that lean toward particular palettes; if you don't, the gender-neutral range covers everything.
How much will you write? A card with a smaller format suits a shorter message. If you tend to write at length - and a new baby is an occasion that often calls for it - choose a card that gives you the space to do it properly.
When to Send a New Baby Card
The timing matters more than people realise. A card that arrives in the first week, while the parents are still in the thick of the newborn fog, lands differently to one that arrives three weeks later once the initial wave has passed.
As soon as you hear the news is almost always the right answer. A card arriving in the first few days - acknowledging the arrival, expressing genuine happiness, saying something specific if you know a name or details - is the one that gets remembered. It signals that you were paying attention, and that the news mattered enough to act on immediately.
If you weren't told straight away, a card on hearing the news is still completely appropriate - and a card that acknowledges the slight gap ("I've been thinking about you all since I heard...") turns the timing into something warm rather than awkward.
What to Write
The blank inside is an invitation, not a challenge. A few things that always work:
- Name the baby, if you know it
- Say something to the parents, not just about the baby
- Be specific - reference something about the relationship, the wait, the moment
- Keep it honest - brief and genuine is always better than long and borrowed
